Hot on the heels of Cisco’s announcement that it would make available an open source version of its H.264 codec, Dialogic has published the results of its survey of its own developers regarding their preferences for mandatory codecs for WebRTC.

It’s tricky to draw any hard and fast conclusions about this as Dialogic’s developers aren’t necessarily representative of the wider WebRTC developer community. But the data are interesting all the same and show that H.264 is perceived to be a royalty based option whereas VP8 is the preferred royalty free choice. However, the fieldwork may have been conducted prior to Cisco’s announcement.
